Grinding VS bevelling: what are the common points and what are the main differences?

There is a series of Lattuada machines dedicated to each type, but what changes between these glass processings? Today we talk about grinding and beveling techniques, two of the main operations that are performed on a glass sheet immediately after cutting and that contribute to enrich and make special every glass object.

As we have just seen grinding and bevelling of the glass sheet have several points in common: to be after the cutting phase, have the objective of make the glass suitable for its final use both from a functional and aesthetic point of view. However, these two operations have profound differences!

The glass grinding intervenes directly on the sheet in order to eliminate the impurities of the raw cut and smooth the cutting edge; it is a necessary operation on almost all types of glass. Our advice, however, is to perform a good grinding even in the latter case, especially to prevent breakage in the glass from the cutting point. The grinding is carried out using wheels (in most cases diamond wheels) and can be rough edge - that is, leave a greater roughness - or polished edge, where the edge is rounded and flat.

Instead, glass bevelling intervenes exclusively on the edge of the glass and has the objective of obtaining a bevelled shapeglass bevelling intervenes exclusively on the edge of the glass and has the objective of obtaining a bevelled shape with a minimum thickness of 10mm up to a maximum thickness of 35mm. The bevelling operation is particularly suitable in the case of glass intended for interior decoration such as, for example, tables top, mirrors or windows: thanks to the bevelled glass it is possible to create a perimeter edge with a special bevel comparable to the effect of diamond. A finish of great aesthetic impact and highly resistant!

The quality of the materials used and the technical differences of the two operations produce different aesthetic results. While the grinding creates a flat edge that reflects light, the bevel creates an angled surface with a diamond effect that reduces imperfections along the entire edge of the glass sheet. In both cases, the glass appears immediately more polished and finished and it is also more resistant to impact and temperature changes.

Both glass grinding and glass bevelling can be done with a Lattuada machine!
