Robotic solutions, IOT and automatic machine in glass grinding
What are the real benefits that the robotics, l’IOT (Internet of Things) and the automatic machines can bring to the glass grinding? We discuss it in this article!
We are now for all intents and purposes in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution, a true conceptual evolution in the way we understand “doing industry” and the related processes of organization and production. It is with the term industry 4.0 pointing to this now fully established trend of Integrate industrial automation and new manufacturing technologies to improve working conditions and increase productivity and quality of a company's facilities.
This revolution has also swept the glass processing world: relying on solutions that automate tasks and increase production flexibility, glassworks can outsource the most repetitive operations to automated systems shifting staff to tasks of greater responsibility and, at the same time, they can connect different machines together to enable complete integration and a coordinated production process. Bringing one's reality into the world of Industry 4.0 therefore means being more competitive in the market and taking a leap into the future, beating the competition to the punch.
What we have seen so far can be achieved through several solutions including the’Internet of Things or “internet of things”: a path of technological development that, through the Internet, makes every object endowed with its own identity in the digital world--glass grinding machines included! Specifically, at Lattuada, this is achieved through the software PLM IOT i-Like Machines which allows you to connect machines to each other, get constant production monitoring, and always have workflow data at your fingertips thanks to an intuitive and easy-to-use interface. Choose a Lattuada straight-line grinding machine equipped with our software will enable your glassworks to monitor the production cycle in real time, be alerted in case of malfunction, optimize plant production and reduce downtime.
L’Automation in the world of glass processing also goes from making machines automatic through the integration of exclusive systems that make particular operations autonomous; for this in Lattuada we have developed the A-WR which introduces a Fully automatic management of grinding wheel adjustment and the system i-AL, a complete package of mechanical, electronic and software components designed precisely to offer the Maximum possible automation in glass processing and complete integration with the entire production system.
But it doesn't end there! In the world of Industry 4.0 applied to glass processing, robots are now protagonists: fully automatic machines capable of performing most of the operations usually carried out by technicians and able to work synergistically with humans. Precisely to achieve this, for several years in Lattuada we have been collaborating with the German company Knittel Glass, thanks to which we can incorporate the KUKA robot capable of performing tasks such as edge detection, automatic glass measurement and moving glass sheets from one machine to another without operator intervention into our production lines.
Back in 2017, at the Vitrum exhibition, we brought to the attention of Italian and European glassmakers a solution that integrates KUKA robot and two Lattuada straight-line grinding machines.: In this case we had set up two flat-wire straight-line grinding machines with 11 grinding wheels, a fully automatic glass measuring device, and a KUKA robot to connect the two machines. Thanks to this type of integration it was possible to obtain automatic adjustment of the working speed according to the size of the glass, continuous production and a possibility of glass rotation of 90° or 180°. A real innovation that allowed, already 6 years ago, to streamline the workload of the operators and achieve controlled production in all aspects!
To date, the synergy between KUKA's multi-axis articulated robots and Lattuada's new fully automatic grinding machine models enables a Significant increase in productivity, a reduction in process costs and increased operator safety especially when processing large sheets of glass.
Want to take your glassworks into the future? We summarize here the main benefits you can get:
- Improve the automation of the glass grinding process
- Lowering production costs by reducing downtime
- Standardize grinding quality and increase production for the same amount of time spent
- increase the flexibility of machinery
- Lower production-related risks by minimizing human-machine interaction
